Thursday 20 November 2014

Please join us and help us celebrate our traditional ‘Magusto’ (or Chestnut Celebration), Saturday (22nd) at 6pm in the Centre at St Paul's (Hills Road)!
The celebration of roasted chestnuts is associated with a legend, which says that a Roman soldier, known as Martin of Tours, once rode his horse by an almost naked beggar on a rainy day, and having nothing to give, he cut his cloak in half with his sword and gave it to him. Legend has it that at that exact moment it stopped raining, which is why, according to the legend, it is always sunny on St Martin's day - this is often referred to as "St Martin's summer".
As usual we will have the amazing Portuguese roasted chestnuts, and also some other traditional Portuguese snacks and drinks, including the wonderfully indulgent francesinhas from Porto (these last will be available at a small extra price; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francesinha). Entertainment will be guaranteed by popular music and traditional games!
We are looking forward to see you all there!

When: 22nd of November, 6.00pm

Where: Lower Hall, of the Centre at St Paul's, Hills Road, Cambridge CB2 1JP (http://www.centrestpauls.org.uk)

Price: £3,00 for Members, £5,00 for Non-Members

Bike Ride to Saint Ives

After the great success of our last year's ride to Ely we are creating a new tradition of CUPORTSS' bike rides.

Inspired by the visit of the best Portuguese cyclists during the Tour de France Stage 3, we are now going to Saint Ives using the traffic free busway.

Saint Ives is a historic market town whose name is related to the body of a Persian Bishop called Saint Ivo who was found buried in the town in about 1001/2.

It is 12 miles North East of Cambridge in a flat landscape so it is a ride suitable to everyone. We are planning a picnic there and a ride back to Cambridge in the afternoon.

This is not a race! Our peloton will be always compact and we will choose a speed that fits everyone. And there are no hills in the fens, so don't be afraid: You can do it! The tour is completely free!

You will need:

- A bike (always needed for bike tours)
- Food to share (for the picnic, but you can also buy something at Saint Ives)
- Helmet (not mandatory)
- Spare tube (you may get a puncture)
- Happiness (If you don't bring you will certainly get it in the end)

 DISCLAIMER

All riders in the Bike Ride to Ely do so entirely at their own risk. CUPORTSS and its agents cannot accept any responsibility for personal accident, loss, or damage to cycles, equipment and personal effects or any public liability. All riders are deemed to have accepted these conditions by entering the event.

Our second Film Night of 2014 will show "Florbela", a biographical film about the Portuguese poet Florbela Espanca, directed by Vicente Alves do Ó.Synopsis: Portugal, 1920. The third time is not a charm for Portuguese poet Florbela Espanca (1894-1930) who, on her third marriage, discovers that life as a housewife in the provinces will not soothe her restless soul. Florbela packs up her bags and joins her brother Apeles, a Naval Aviation official, in Lisbon. Together, they embrace a life full of parties, political protests, alcohol and, even, love. This superbly produced and very moving film introduces audiences to one of Portuguese’s literature most fascinating authors.

Film Night - A Gaiola Dourada

http://www.magazine-hd.com/apps/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/A-Gaiola-Dourada-Destaque1.jpg

Our first Film Night of 2014 will show "The Gilded Cage - A Gaiola Dourada", a film by director Ruben Alves, that has been a success with audiences around Europe winning the Audience Award at the European Film Awards last year.

Join us for a night that promises a lot of laughs!

Synopsis: Maria (Rita Blanco) and José (Joaquim de Almeida) emigrated from Portugal 30 years ago. Ever since, they have lived in the modest ground floor lodgings of a chic apartment building in Paris, raising their now adult daughter and teenage son. They are universally liked around the community: Maria is the buildings concierge, always available even on her day off maintaining the high standards the inhabitants depend on. José, a building site foreman, is equally as indispensable to his boss (though both men are unaware that their son and daughter are secretly engaged). When José learns he has inherited the family winery and the couples dream of returning to Portugal is now possible, they are elated but struggle with how to tell those around them. However, word of the big news spreads anyway, and soon their family, neighbours, friends and employers are scrambling behind the scenes to find ways to prevent them from leaving. Richly informed by his own upbringing as the son of Portuguese immigrants in Paris, Alves warm-hearted, cross-cultural comedy features a terrific ensemble cast, spot-on comic timing and a thoroughly appealing central couple, whose dilemmas are portrayed with great tenderness and affection. Enthusiastically embraced by audiences upon release in April 2013, THE GILDED CAGE became the sleeper box office hit of the French spring, achieving over 1.2 million admissions in less than five weeks.
