CUPortSS 2016 Christmas Dinner

One of the most magical times of the year is less than a month away! In Portugal, Christmas (or Natal as we call it) is a joyful time to gather family and friends. It is also the time of the year for cod delicacies, various meats and delicious desserts, many prepared like Grandma used to.

If you would like to get a taste of the Portuguese Christmas traditions, come and join us in our very popular Christmas dinner on Saturday the 10th of December at the St Paul’s Centre (aka St Paul's Church), from 7 pm, with authentic home-made Portuguese food. There will be several dietary options available, both for the main course and dessert! If you really don't want to miss it, GET YOUR TICKET HERE, and get it now before they run out! Please be aware that booking the ticket is free, but payment is done at the entrance on the day of the event.

Bike Ride to Audley End

Portugal has a great tradition of tourism tours for old people. The tours to the almond blossom are the most famous.

Unfortunately we do not have almond trees in Cambridgeshire so we cannot create a tour like that. But we have lots of beautiful landscapes where we can cycle.

Bring your bike and let's celebrate the echinox, the Cambridgeshire and Essex Countryside and the stunning Audley End House and Gardens.

We will start Sunday, October 2, in front of Guildhall and we will cycle towards Audley End and Saffron Walden. We will visit Audley End House and neighbouring Saffron Walden has a Café just for cyclists.

This is not a race! Our peloton will be always compact and we will choose a speed that fits everyone. You can do it!

The tour is completely free but you must pay the tickets to Audley End and to return to Cambridge by train if you don't want to cycle back.

You will need:

• A bike (always needed for bike tours)
• Food to share (for the picnic)
• Helmet (not mandatory)
• Spare tube (You may have a puncture)
• Happiness (If you don't bring you will certainly get it in the end)

Summer Picnic!

Hello everyone!

British summer keeps on surprising after an amazing series of days with 30+ degrees - and no rain!

To celebrate this, and just like previously announced, we want to invite you to the CUPortSS Summer Picnic! Bring your picnic basket with your favourite snacks, friends, family and/or pets, and join us on Jesus Green next to Park Parade (west side) on the 30th of July around 15h for an afternoon of relaxation.

3rd CUPortSS Wine Tasting

This year we are delighted to present the 3^rd Cambridge University Portuguese Speakers Society Wine Tasting event!
We will have a large variety of wines from the Douro Valley, including Port, as well as a Portuguese cocktail stand and many traditional Portuguese nibbles.

The event will be divided in two sessions: a Workshop, followed by the Wine Tasting.

Session I – Port and Douro Wines Tasting and Cocktail Workshop - Starting at 4pm

• A one-hour workshop led by a guest speaker: Mr. Paulo Osório, MEng, MBA, former Vice President of the Port and Douro Wine Institute (IVDP).
• It will include a presentation about the Douro Region and its wines and a tasting session guided by the guest speaker, with a selection of top Port and Douro wines. 
• There will be a limit of 25 participants, with tickets purchased in advance.

Session II - Wine Tasting - Starting at 6pm

• An open wine tasting session where the participants can taste a wide variety of high quality Port and Douro wines.

Tiago Brandão Rodrigues is Portugal's new Chief Minister of Education

CUPortSS congratulates its member Tiago Brandão Rodrigues after his nomination to be the new Chief Minister of Education in Portugal. Tiago was a member of the committee in 2011 and 2012 and contributed for the success of this society during those years.

It is now with a great honour that we have our member in the most important role in Portugal's education sector. We wish him the very best of luck and we are sure Tiago will do an excellent work!

Magusto - Chestnut Event

There are quite a few chestnut trees in town.
Some of you may have noticed them on Jesus Green, and the chestnuts that they leave behind.
Maybe some of you have considered taking some chestnuts home, but then again, these chestnuts are probably best thought of as being property of squirrels and other local wild-life, which need every help they can get in their search for food, shelter, and post-doc positions.

If anyone was adventurous enough to roast a few of these chestnuts, then I'm very, very sorry. And as you probably know by now, the chestnuts found on the ground around Cambridge are in fact mildly poisonous. As those high beautiful trees are no simple chestnut trees, but rater horse‑chestnut trees, chosen more for their looks than for what they produce.

Speaking of chestnuts, the annual CUPortSS Magusto will be next Saturday, 21st of November at 6:30, St Paul's Church.
We have some tasty, non-poisonous chestnuts brought in directly from Portugal.
We also have red wine, as well as wine of other colours.
Last but not least, we're also having some delicious Francesinhas, a characteristic Portuguese dish.

The prices are as follows:

Entry - Non-Members £6
Half Francesinha £5

The entry ticket includes chestnuts and wine.
The Half Francesinha is an extra, but it is not everyday that one manages to get a good Francesinha in town.
